What to Eat (And What Not to Eat) for a Healthy Pregnancy

ENJOY:

  • As many fruits and veggies as possible, note superstars
  • Monounsaturated fats as your main fats (extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, nuts/seeds, avocados)
  • 100% whole grain breads, cereals, etc.
  • Omega 3 fats regularly (salmon, sardines, omega 3 eggs, walnuts, canola oil, wheat germ, soy foods)
  • Any variety of bean/legume — daily best
  • A healthy protein package at each meal— low toxin fish/shellfish, poultry, low-fat dairy products, nuts, beans, soy, omega 3 eggs, lean red meat
  • Lots of clean water
  • 3 or more calcium rich foods daily — low fat/skim dairy products, beans, tofu, dark leafy greens, broccoli, almonds, calcium-fortified cereal, canned salmon with bones

RESTRICT/AVOID

  • The “Great White Hazards” — white flour products, white potatoes, white rice, sugar/sweets
  • Excessive saturated fats — fatty cuts and processed red meat, whole dairy products, butter
  • Trans fats — strictly avoid (stick margarine, processed foods with hydrogenated oils, shortening)
  • Sweet processed beverages  — soda, fruit drinks, sports drinks, etc.
  • Ready-to-eat, refrigerated, deli-style luncheon meats, hot dogs, smoked seafood unless reheated until steaming hot
  • Unpasteurized dairy products like soft cheeses (brie, blue, feta etc.) Check labels.
  • Fish high in toxins — Strictly avoid — shark, marlin, tile fish, king mackerel, swordfish, fresh tuna, canned Albacore tuna, local fresh water fish
  • Raw sprouts and raw or undercooked fish, meat, poultry or eggs. (Sources of harmful bacteria)
  • Liver (toxins and excessive vitamin A)
  • Alcohol — strictly avoid
  • Caffeine (coffee, tea, diet/regular soda)
