Protein - How to do Your Proteins Right! Part 1

In previous articles, I have covered how to do your fats right and how to do your carbs right, and finally it’s time to provide guidance for the 1 remaining macronutrient – protein.  Although there is less earth-shattering new science related to protein and health vs. carbs and fats and health, the right proteins are a powerful ally in your quest to maximize wellness and vitality.  When it comes to dietary protein and wellness, there are 2 basic strategies you need to know:

  1. Consume protein in the healthy packages.
  2. Be sure to have protein at every meal.

Just like carbs and fats, some forms of protein are much better for you than others.  The difference is not so much the specific type of protein, but what else comes along in the package.  For example, if you have a t-bone steak, you get lots of high quality protein, but you also get a whopping dose of artery-clogging saturated fat.  If you have a piece of fish, you get lots of high quality protein, along with the darling of the healthy eating world, omega 3 fat.  The concept is to choose protein packages that don’t contain excessive amounts of unhealthy components like saturated and trans fats, but rather contain other health-promoting nutrients like monounsaturated fats, omega 3 fats, fiber and phytochemicals.
